26.09.12 – Monster Energy MSA British Rallycross Championship, in association with MaKTraK

The Monster Energy MSA British Rallycross Championship, in association with MaKTraK returns to Pembrey for the first time since 2010 next weekend when the penultimate round of the six-event series takes place at the home of motor sport in Wales. The championship is finely poised with current champion Julian Godfrey (Heathfield) at the top of the points chart but just three points ahead of multiple title winner Pat Doran (Winkleigh) who has won the two most events in his new Citroën DS3.

The championship situation is more complex than that simple position may make it look, across the remaining two events that 44 points available and as drivers count only their best five results at the end of the year, there are ‘drop’ scores to consider too. The leading pair will also be keeping an eye on Gary Pusey (Great Missenden) and Andy Grant (Barnstaple) who, while unlikely to challenge for the title, are duelling for third place and could break into the top two if things go well for them or if the leaders have problems.

The Pembrey event will provide a full day of action, the British championship’s supporting classes also building to the end of their championships with Ash Simpson (York) on the verge of securing the Supernational title in his Lotus Exige. Mike Howlin (Haverfordwest) has raced only a couple of times this year in his rear-wheel drive Fiesta but has entered his home event at Pembrey and is capable of taking the fight to Simpson.

The most closely fought of the eight championships that appear on the British championship bill is the Swift Sport series where the top seven drivers remain in contention for the title. The evenly matched 1600cc Suzuki Swifts used in the one make series provide consistently close racing and five different event winners so far this year. The series is led by Jony Bean (Northallerton) who is a single point ahead of Chris Mullen (Leeds) with pre-season favourite Tony Lynch (Wigan) a further four points adrift in third place.

James Ross (Watford) can clinch the MSA Junior Rallycross Championship with a good result at Pembrey where the Super1600, Hot Hatch, BMW MINI and RX150 championships also appear alongside the Monster Energy British series.

New to the championship this year, Retro Rallycross is the first series in Rallycross for historic or classic cars. Launched at Mallory Park in July and then running its second event at Lydden in August, Retro Rallycross has two classes; pre-1982 and 1982-’87, the latter group including all four wheel drive cars such as Rob Gibson’s Group B MG Metro 6R4 and the Lancia Delta Integrale of Polish racer Greg Kalinecki.

Final fling for club racers

The programme of events at Pembrey also includes the final round of the Clubmans Rallycross Championship which has been contested over a different group of six events and which is led by Craig Lomax (Leeds) who has battled his way to the top of the Stock Hatch class and also leads the championship overall. The Clubmans series offers double points in the final round, so the championship situation and can change quickly during what is certain to be a hotly contested event at Pembrey.

Irish championship starts in Wales

As well as forming the final round in the British championship season, the Pembrey event is the first round of the 2012-2013 Irish Rallycross Championship, that is based at Mondello Park in County Kildare and has a nine-round schedule that runs through to November 2013, including one event at Nutts Corner in County Antrim.
